Locally grown food at a fair price

Kinsale Food Club is working with two local farmers to grow oats and potatoes using a new system of  food production known as Community Supported Agriculture (CSA).

These days farmers are mainly getting supported in the dairy and beef sector of farming. So it’s up to us the local community to support the farmer and encourage them to grow vegetables so that they are fresh and easily sourced for us. This creates a stronger link to our food and creates community resilience.

This a great idea, instead of buying and paying for our oats and spuds every week, we pay for it all in one go. Let’s put it this way €240 for a years supply is only approximately €8 a week for local spuds, and that is just for a full share. You could do a half share instead which is even cheaper / €4 per week. So if it’s local and organic it’s going to be fresher, we also use less carbon as we are not transporting from afar. We are also helping to strengthen the local economy..............................................continued

 Announcement !!

  •   10 more people are needed to sign up for this years potato crop (you get about 5kg of potatoes a week for 6/7 months from September - including some rather nice varieties) - €120 total - €60 NOW

  •   7 more people are needed to sign up for this years Oats crop (you get ready to cook roasted oats, about 20kg, bagged, in October - for your winter breakfasts) - €75 total - ONE PAYMENT

This is where members of the community agree to share the costs and risks of growing produce with a local farmer. The benefits are:

  • Economic - the farmer gets a good price for his/her produce and the consumer gets good value food
  • Social - it creates a strong sense of community and can also be a lot of fun
  • Food security - by building a local food economy we are preparing for a lean energy future in which we cannot depend on food transported from far away
  • Environment -by consuming locally grown food we are reducing our food miles and CO2 emissions
  • Health - most of the food is organic, free from chemicals, pesticides and artificial fertilisers.

What's the deal?

Oats

€75 per share, for approx. 20kg oats. Half a share is €40.

Potatoes

€240 per share for approx. 10 kg organic potatoes per week, delivered locally for 6-7 months. This equates to €10 per week.

€120 per half share.
