The Transition Town Kinsale ‘50 Mile Meal’ Award was launched by Derek Davis at the 2007 Gourmet Food Festival and has featured each year since. The award is given to any dish prepared with ingredients produced within a 50 mile radius of the town. Two prizes are awarded at ‘The Mad Hatters Taste of Kinsale':- the most exquisite 50 Mile Meal and the TTK Special Commendation. This award highlights the issue of food miles and the importance of local food production. Transition Town Kinsale now hopes to introduce the ‘50 Mile Meal Award’ onto the Menus of Restaurants in Town and a 50 Mile Award in local shops.
Transition Town Kinsale (TTK) has achieved a reputation abroad as being the world's first Transition Town in what is rapidly becoming a movement with hundreds of villages, towns and cities in Ireland, the UK and around the globe preparing to follow the same path in the transition towards local sustainability.
Over the past five years, because of a committed group of social entrepreneurs, and the support of the Town Council and Cork County Council, TTK has facilitated projects in food, energy, transport and education. We have worked with other community and business groups including The Good Food Circle; The Chamber of Tourism; Tidy Towns; Kinsale Arts Week; local National Schools; the Community School; Kinsale Further Education College; Foróige; Kinsale Active Retirement Association; The Healthy Options Group and The Carmelite Friary.
TTK’s Food Forum: Kinsale’s Edible Garden’s Network runs our Autumn Food Festival and a Sow & Grow day in spring. Our Community Garden Awards were launched in 2009 and we have established small orchards on three housing developments in Kinsale. We are also working with Sáile to develop a Community Orchard and Garden on their site. We helped facilitate the setting up of allotments with a local farmer and two TTK committee members have set up a Community Supported Agriculture Scheme (Vegetable Box) and two further CSA schemes were set up with local farmers to grow oats and potatoes.
The Education for Sustainability’s team of facilitators which is now teaching in 6 schools locally has a program which includes teaching about food production in gardens that the kids have helped to create. TTK also developed a year-long program on building sustainable communities for the Transition Year students at Kinsale Community School. It included films, games, discussion and practical activities, including a school garden.
